On 4 May 2015, Michel Sidibé, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) and UNAIDS Executive Director, visited Hanergy Holding Group (Hanergy) and signed a Memorandum of Understanding to cooperate in the fight against HIV/AIDS. According to the memorandum, their aim is to realize the ultimate vision of “zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination, and zero AIDS-related deaths.” This is the third time that Mr. Sidibé has visited Hanergy and the first time UNAIDS has signed a strategic memorandum of understanding with a private Chinese enterprise. Hanergy and UNAIDS will first focus on AIDS prevention and treatment, AIDS education and community development, with the joint goal of promoting sustainable development in Africa.
Hanergy Chairman and CEO Li Hejun noted in a speech that the traditional charity models were gradually transitioning to comprehensive and long-term partnerships. Hanergy and UNAIDS are exploring new models of cooperation and methods to better facilitate AIDS prevention and treatment.
Hanergy signs Memorandum of Understanding with UNAIDS
The cooperation between Hanergy and UNAIDS shows that “yesterday’s dreams can become today’s reality.” On 14 Aug. 2013, when Mr. Sidibé visited Hanergy for the first time, he had a talk with a dozen well-known entrepreneurs from China on issues such as the global fight in AIDS prevention and treatment and the role Chinese private enterprises can play.
Hanergy has strengthened its cooperation with UNAIDS over the past two years. On 27 Feb. 2014, the two co-held the world’s first Zero Discrimination: World AIDS Day.; the second Zero Discrimination was celebrated on 1 March 2015, in which Hanergy played an active role. Earlier this year, Hanergy and UNAIDS launched the program “Power2Africa” which will see Hanergy donate solar power generation systems to hospitals, schools and communities to relieve power shortages in Africa. Hanergy also launched the program “Power2Empower Ghana” together with the UNAIDS Ghana Office to realize the “3 Zeros” ultimate vision of improving sanitation, education levels, and raise awareness of AIDS in Ghana.
Mr. Li Hejun and Mr. Sidibé sign their names on a football in support of the global initiative “Protect the Goal.”
The signing ceremony witnessed a special moment: Mr. Li Hejun and Mr. Sidibé signed their names on a football in support of the global initiative “Protect the Goal.” At present, the initiative aimed at raising awareness of HIV and mobilizing young people to commit to HIV prevention has gained support from more than 40 well-known public figures globally including Presidents, First Ladies and famous football players.
UNAIDS chose to cooperate with Hanergy—a world-leading multinational clean energy company—for its strong sense of social responsibility. As one of the initiators of the China Red Ribbon Foundation, Hanergy has made great contributions in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Since 2005, Hanergy has donated more than 10 million yuan for AIDS prevention and treatment and provided free office space and other kinds of support to the China Red Ribbon Foundation. Hanergy also actively mobilizes its employees to be involved in AIDS related information campaigns as volunteers.
China has developed a working plan to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS while facilitating treatment. The government provides an outline for action and provides leadership from the top and encourages companies to take part in campaigns like the UN Millennium Development Goals to stem the spread of HIV. As China continues down the path of urbanization and modernization, private enterprises wield a growing amount of social resources and are better equipped to contribute in the global fight against HIV/AIDS.
Hanergy’s cooperation with UNAIDS is an important step in the company’s efforts to carry out its social responsibilities as a global enterprise. It is a model for other companies and their participation in global AIDS prevention and treatment. At the signing ceremony, Hanergy Chairman Li Hejun appealed to corporations to take part in this common undertaking by bearing the vision of the long-term development of human society and fully recognizing the responsibilities of corporations in serving the public.
